Given all of this year's publicity about Professor Gates, it was good to read his memoir. I am looking forward to his telling his story of growing up and the differences between then and now.

I was so surprised, despite the recommendation of a friend, at the warm, funny, bitter-sweet tone of this book. I expected a sociological polemic, but in fact it's the story I wish I'd written about my not-very-different working class white family.

This is a powerful story, rich with the details of family life. As a contemporary of Gates, I found his story engaging and sobering. The idea that closeknit, extended black families might experience integration as a loss surprised and moved me to think about how passionate - but in some ways clueless - I was in the 60s.
